The sinking of the Titanic: Unavoidable tragedy or careless accident?

Looking back at an event that happened 98 years ago, it is tempting to make a judgement on what happened, but using to-days standards to do that, is not only unfair, it is also very unreliable.

Information  available varies, and people have their own opinions. The researcher has a difficult job finding the true facts. One web site called History: why did Titanic sink ? names four people responsible for the disaster. Other web sites blame no one. To find the length of the Titanic, the figures vary, depending on which web site or book you refer to.

The sources for my information has been numerous Internet web sites and books that I own. I could not swear on oath that I am right, or wrong. I wasn't personally involved in any way with the Titanic. The line I take is what I consider to be the most logical sources of information.

The Americans spent many years building the rocket that took men to the moon in the middle 1960's. It is very unlikely that they would use the same technology today, should they want to return to the moon. Things change.

To judge the first rocket with the rockets available today, would serve no purpose if one wanted to say why they were wrong in some things back then.

The great and highly respected Henry Ford went bankrupt on at least one occasion. He leaned from his mistakes, and went on to be come the manufacturer of one of the most popular and loved Model T. No one would attempt to seriously judge the Model T against a Ford car built today.

The Titanic was built to the highest standards of the day. No one can say the Titanic was built otherwise. The American owned Company White Star had given the designers and engineers a full brief on what they wanted the ship to be capable of. During construction, Representatives from the USA had kept an eye on the building of the ship.

As everyone knows, the Titanic was claimed to be unsinkable.

Why did they claim that ? Because in 1912 with the technology available, they sincerely believed it was unsinkable. They had no computers in those days to do research. They had no reason to believe it could sink. Again, in retrospect we obviously know it was not unsinkable. Was it an accident or an avoidable tragedy, maybe it was both, and more. On the information available, it seems it most likely was an accident just waiting to happen eventually.

Until that time, no large passenger liner had collided with an iceberg of such a grand scale. Over the years many myths have come about regarding
