Is the United States of America a real Democracy?
Perhaps years and years ago America was very close to being a real democracy as the elected officials and the people were truly interested in the idea of freedom for the people and by the people. Democracy loomed in the hearts of Americans as an obtainable goal. Neighbor cared about neighbor, leading to the idea that unity has to be a foundation for democracy.
Democracy cannot simply be freedom for the sake of freedom, it must be embellished with rights and restrictions which provides fairness for the people and not just the few.
Democracy stemmed from a religious prospective as were the founders of America, this new democracy was going to be different from the country they were fleeing from.
Religious ideals were written by the founders of America as one could see the spiritual influences it had in the creation of the United States Constitution and so we immediately recognize that democracy takes on a whole new importance since the people are willing to incorporate the teachings of God in the articles of this newly formed government eventually called The United States.
However, that was then and this is now. Democracy in government today seems like a needle in a hay stack. Ask the people today and see if they believe political representatives actually work for the people? Who's really controlling this country - elected officials or corporations spending big bucks to push through their agendas?
How can we be united in a democracy when we don't even know who we are? Ask the question “What Is An American” and see how many different answers one gets! What people can and cannot do today is not “by the people” but by the lawyers and the courts.
The document which governs our freedom isn't being followed, it's being changed, religious activity approved by the founders of America like Christmas images allowed from the beginning can be removed by a single foreigner because in their country those images weren't used.
Today change comes when a committee of people can come together and overcome the political road blocks set against them. Everyone for the most part are guilty until proved innocence.
The sadness part of all this is I truly feel we as Americans will never again be able to capture the true sense of democracy again because democracy isn't just about procedures but it's also a mindset and a genuine concern for others.
Democracy in the United States may have been in our past but it clearly is not in our future.
