The Eye of Horus is an ancient symbol from old Egyptian times which represents protection of royalty. The symbol, often referred to as the “Eye of Ra” is often featured as a center point on royal deities worshipped in Egypt. On ancient murals, the eye can be found on paintings of Gods and ancient idols as a representation of power basically defining that those that have the eye are protected. It is a symbol of power and honor which allows scholars and historians to differentiate the difference between those of true power and those often defined as “false Gods”.
The origins of the eye date back to the Egyptian Goddess known as “Wadjat” which is also the translation of the eye in the Egyptian language. Wadjat was the Goddess of the City of Dep and was labeled as a protector of those in her sector of the country. This is evidently where the definition and the symbolic meaning of the eye comes from. The symbol, which is apparently a drawing of her actual eye, is a symbol of protection and royalty. However, the depths of the meaning behind the Eye of Horus go even deeper.
The eye has also been used in war. It is a symbol of protection and as such, if invaders would see the Eye of Horus painted on a certain area, they would immediately understand that the area was protected and would cease their plan of action. In ancient times, it was also used in war to define that the King that lived in a certain city was protected. Given the historic value of the symbol, which induces the feeling of superstition, this method would often be effective in warding off the enemy.
The Eye of Horus has also been referred to as “the all seeing eye” which can be seen in popular culture with the current trend of “Big Brother”. The eye featured in the hit reality television show is very similar in style, but more of a modern style variation and is also referred to as the all seeing eye which stays true to the shows concept that Big Brother is always watching; a concept based on George Orwell’s classic “Nineteen Eighty Four”.
The Eye of Horus is a beautiful image and one that represents so much ancient history, wealth, power and prestige. It is a cherished image in Egypt and countless murals, paintings and even pottery work can be found using its image as reference and inspiration. Even in modern times, the Eye of Horus can still be prominently seen. With history delving so deep into intellectual and symbolic beauty, it is safe to say that the Eye of Horus will always be a prominent site in Egyptian culture.
