If you have crochet a square block and it is getting a little mundane try a mitered square which is just a little different kind of block. This block may be just the thing you are looking for to add to your crochet knowledge. It is not difficult to do and can be used alone for potholders or sewn together for larger items such as blankets or Afghans. It may be just the right thing to give you a bit more challenge to your work. You can use solid color or spice the block up with a variegated yarn. Once you know how to crochet a mitered square the sky is the limit for the uses of these blocks.
The basic principle of the mitered square is that you will increase your stitch in every row until you arrive at the end of the size of square that you want. It is up to you how large you want this square to be and if you are thinking an Afghan it would probably benefit you to use a double crochet stitch instead of a single crochet. The possibilities are endless once you know how to do this square and it such a simple square to do.
Instructions for a crochet mitered square
Round 1: Chain two stitches and make three single crochets in the second chain from your hook. Chain one.
Round 2: Turn your work and single crochet in the nearest chain from your hook. Make three single crochets in the next stitch. End this row by single crocheting in the last stitch. Chain one and turn your work.
Round 3: Single crochet in the next two chains. Make three single crochets in the next chain and two single crochets in the next two chains.
Repeat rows
Repeat these rows until the square is finished. Cast off your stitches and you now have a mitered square. Fasten off your work securely. You will be amazed at how pretty these squares look once they are sewn together. What is taking place is that you increase the center of each row by two stitches every time you make a row. This widens your square as you continue to crochet.
Crocheting is an art that anyone would be proud to master. There are many different items that can be made from tablecloths to bedspreads for the person that is truly motivated. For the beginner there are simple squares that can be joined to make spectacular Afghans or baby blankets. It is a wonderful pastime for anyone and very relaxing. It is all possible once you get the hang of making mitered squares and progress to fancier ones. You only have your imagination to limit the things you can make.
