Some people have a certain way of changing your life, simply by being themselves.

I have a favorite, very dear old friend like that.

He's kind of a character.

Come to think of it, that phrase would describe most of my friends! 

But this one... even more so.

For starters, he's very tall and big.

So tall and big, if I hadn't been able to tell right away he was a gentle soul, I'd have run away when we first met.  

His upper arms were bigger around than my head.

I just kept looking up, and saying WOW.

He's kind of used to that, I guess, since I didn't hust his feelings or make him angry .

He held my hand instead, and it fit inside his- just  as if I were a tiny child.

I've since figured out that I can't quite hug him all the way.

And   how I should stand on my toes or wear high heels, if I want a kiss from him without my neck hurting.

And that regular sized furniture, shoes, clothes and even cars or movie theaters don't quite fit him sometimes. 

He calmly takes all that in stride and almost never uses his size or strength to his advantage.

It's one reason I liked him, almost instantly.

The other reasons are his kindness, patience, honesty and thoughtfulness. 

He will always take the time to call or text to ask how my day was, what's new, or just simply say hello.  

Even when he's been badly hurt, sick, travelled, been busy with other friends or family, he's  still made time for me.

He's always thinking about everyone but himself.

He'll drape a giant robe or jacket over my shoulders, even if he's freezing.

Cover me up with his blanket, while we watch TV.

Even though his big old feet already stick out. 

And I always laugh.

Because his toes and my fingers are just about the same size.

He doesn't mind, he likes to make me laugh.

He's also world's best cuddler, and amazingly gentle.

He's given me the lighest, sofest, most relaxing backrubs I've ever enjoyed.

And I've been wrapped up in his arms and rocked  to sleep, on a few really bad days. 

They just melted away, like dirty old snow in the sunshine.

 I was safe in his big arms with my head on that massive chest.

Absolutely nothing or no one would ever try get through and disturb me.

 When I'm feeling sad or lonely, and start getting down on myself, he will smile, and say: "You don't see what I see."

And I truly wish I that I could. 

The funny thing is he's been through more challenges and setbacks in the past few years than most people endure in a lifetime.

Including me.

He is a hero, who's been knocked down and gotten back up more times than I can count.

If I told the whole story, there'd be people who'd probably know who he is, and agree on that.

But he wouldn't like that, so, I won't.

But I will tell this part.

Each and every time I'd try to be his rock, listen, or  just be there for him, he'd turn it around, and give me back even more.

I am so proud of the way he's come back from the many disappointments and setbacks he's faced.

It's what's made him so strong, brave and unselfish.

And I'm so very blessed, and grateful, to have the honor to call him friend.

I almost lost him a couple of times, and I thank God he's still around.

Losing him would truly break my heart.

I heard a phrase the other day that perfectly describes my friend...

"Generosity of spirit".
