The Unexpected Journey
Patrick Tidymouse sat on the table just next to a big plate of scones. It was a special china plate with pretty pink roses and gold all around the edge. Old Mrs. Grumblebottom had prepared the scones for tea and put them on her best china, the smell was wonderful. Patrick climbed onto the plate and began to nibble the scone closest to the edge.
“Drop it! Ye wee pest or I’ll have ye fer lunch,” shouted Posy, Old Mrs. Grumblebottom’s ever vigilant white Persian cat.
“Come and get me fur ball!” shouted Patrick, rubbing his tummy and smacking his lips.
Now this was not the first time Posy caught Patrick stealing food from Old Mrs. Grumblebottom’s kitchen, but it might be the first time she caught him!
Patrick was not scared because Posy was so clumsy he knew she could never catch him. He took his time and nibbled a little more of the scone. He could not wait to see Posy slide around the corner from the hallway on Mrs. Grumblebottom’s beautiful red Persian Carpet. But the carpet was not there and neither was the well-tended pot of Geraniums into which Posy always crashed. Instead she was in hot pursuit, and to his surprise about to catch him. That was not funny! Patrick stopped laughing, dropped the scone and ran for his life.
Just in time he saw young Mr. and Mrs. Grumblebottom’s wonderful new wooden trunk. It was the most beautiful trunk he had ever seen! It had shinny brass plates to protect the corners and strong leather handles on each end secured by beautiful brass holders shaped like leaves. And best of all, the lid was not completely closed. Patrick scampered up the side and slipped through the crack falling onto one of young Mr. Grumblebottom’s warm wooly sweaters. The trunk was stuffed with all sorts of things. If only Patrick had noticed that the trunk was the only thing in the sitting room, he might have asked himself why there was no furniture. Patrick did not know the newly wed young Mr. and Mrs. Grumblebottom were about to move to America.
Young Mr. Grumblebottom was a kind patient man who never complained about anything, his new wife young Mrs. Grumblebottom complained about everything, and his mother old Mrs. Grumblebottom
