How to create groups on Facebook

by Jules Martin

Created on: March 04, 2010

Creating a group on Facebook can be a great tool for promoting yourself, a business, a cause or a subject you are interested in.

They are simple to create and can be personalized to reflect your needs.

Once you are logged into your account look under your profile picture and click on the ‘groups’ link. You will be presented with a list of the groups you currently belong to.

In the top right hand corner you will see a link ‘Create a Group’.

You will be asked for general information about the group you would like to create. These include basic information like name, description, email and contact details. Once you have filled in the appropriate information you can click ‘Create Group’.

You will then be taken to a page that allows you to select the features you would like to enable in your group. This includes decisions about what you will allow the members of your group to do and who can join your group.

You are able to do decide who is able to do things such as add links to your sites or other interesting sites, upload videos, create discussion boards and upload photos.

You will then be asked if you would like to publish your group to your profile so that your friends can see you have a newly created group. If there are preparations you would still like to make before you start inviting your friends to join, you can just click ‘Skip’ for now and come back to it when you are ready.

You will then be taken to a page that lists the friends you might like to invite. However if you are not ready to invite friends, just click ‘Go back to...’ in the top right hand corner.

You will be directed to the home page of your group where you can start personalizing, updating and uploading information you would like in your group.

You then have options to promote your new group with Ads, edit your settings, and create events amongst other adjustments you may like to make.

Start to build your group by adding information to the tabs across the top of the page. You can use these pages in the same way that you use an ordinary Facebook account. You can start to get your group active by posting some interesting pieces on your wall, starting a few discussion board topics, adding photos, videos and any events that may be happening for your group.

Then the only thing left to do is to start inviting your friends and watch your group grow!
