Draw A Line
Draw a line in the cold cement streets
that echo deeply in an unforgiven soul
that walks without flair
or pretense to nowhere at all
and yet finds my way back.
Draw a line in the steel and electricity
that reaches endless borders
along the tunnels and by-ways of a city
that harbors hopes for those who
carry wads of green paper
within their ravaged souls.
Draw a line for all unsaid, undone
as the years rushed by like the wind on a willow
and youth became fleeting
and the arms of hope drooped with
arthritic pain that bespeaks a reality of age.
Draw a line for the other side of the mountain
that calls my name in hushed tones
for my ears need to listen carefully for
words of wisdom that arrive too late,
too fast in secession for my tired spirit
is spent, by worry and compromise.
The boat has sailed along its journey
a very long time ago and I stood at the edge of the tide
and watched with fear and consternation
too afraid to venture forth and so I walked away
back to the gray morbid streets of my youth
that never changed, but I did.
Draw a line and watch it fade
into non-existence.
