Why do people blog?

Created on: March 03, 2010

Blogging has given writers a whole set of new options that were unavailable to the majority of people before. Some write to practice their skills, others try to find an audience. This open platform has taken both media and writing to another level, allowing for the appearance of celebrity bloggers and popular individuals in the online realm.

Each individual has specific reasons to start blogging. The availability of blogs and the large audience that they give access to make them a popular tool for both starting and already acknowledged writers.

So why do people blog?

* Expressing ideas openly *
Though some censorship does exist in the online world, web media are generally less tightly controlled than print publications.

Starting a blog allows an individual to express ideas and opinions openly, without the fear of any sanctions. Blogs allow for anonymous writing, giving everyone the chance to talk freely about issues of interest.

A blogger can freely talk about politics, social issues and injustices, crime and the legal system. Blogging allows for freedom of expression and fast exchange of ideas. These features turn blogs into a popular tool for the dissemination of theories and opinions that could have otherwise remained concealed.

* Practicing writing *
Each writer knows that practice leads to perfection. Just writing for pleasure is one thing, presenting the work to an audience transforms the situation completely.

A blog is an excellent exercise platform for each writer. Blogging is social activity, it gives visitors the chance to read articles, post comments and interact with the author.

Bloggers can easily see which topics capture the interest of readers and what remains unnoticed. Examining blog traffic statistics gives the author idea about the stories that readers spent a lot of time on and the keywords that they used to search for the specific topic.

Blogging gives an author some statistical information about the performance of each article. Its popularity could be easily measured to give the author an idea about the manner in which readers perceive each specific piece.

* Getting feedback *
Blogging is far away from one-way communication. When a blogger posts an article, some feedback is to be expected soon.

Many bloggers start writing to express their ideas and to discuss these with blog visitors. Getting comments is probably one of the most exciting blog features.
