Is a house always a home?

There are many different places to live, houses, bungalows, cabins, apartments, condos and even mansions. Some people live on boats, some out in the woods in the middle of nowhere, but what makes a place a home?

I've been in houses where everything was museum' quality. There was a place for everything and everything was in its place. There wasn't a lick of dust to be found, the children were silent, there were no toys or shoes scattered about, and it seemed as if a solemn hush was over the whole place. Greetings were said with blank smiles that never reached the eyes, couples didn't seem as if they were really couples, more like two strangers who happened to share the same house, and the children, if they were seen or heard seemed more like accessories to be brought out and shown off every now and then.

What makes a home is not the place in itself; it's the people who fill it. Home is laughter and tears, hugs and kisses, watching TV and sharing popcorn. Home is sharing coffee and conversation at the kitchen table with a friend.

It's toys on the floors, backpacks and jackets left by the front door, a kitchen table covered with school projects and homework. It's sharing a meal with loved ones, on holidays or anytime. It's the homemade Mother's Day Card from your seven year old, it's attitude from your teenager, including more than a few slammed doors. It's all your teenager's friends calling you mom, even when you don't remember their names. It's sisters screaming, It's for ME!' whenever the phone rings, which is often.

It's bedtime prayers, and kissed boo boos. It's scaring away the boogie man in the middle of the night. It's wiping a sick child's face, and cheering them in the school play. It's birthday parties and backyard barbecues. Home is looking for that perfect Christmas gift.

It's contentment covered with chaos and confusion. It's love given and love returned.

The old adage is true, Home is where the Heart is.

And the Heart is with those you love.
