Camping Fun

There are a lot of things you can pack up with you to ensure that you have a good time camping.  You can even bring along computer laptops and electronic games if you really think the boredom is going to kill you.  You will, however, be missing one of the greatest adventures of all time, the chance to entertain yourself using nothing but your imagination.  Whether you are camping in the forest, a desert, along a beach, or river, there are always things to do to keep yourself and your family and friends amused if you tap into the creative brain power we all have.

What camping trip would be complete without a fire?  Then you are going to need to find several kinds of things to start the fire, unless you brought them with you.  Make a game out of having teams compete to see who can gather the biggest piles of useable logs in the shortest amount of time.  Have young children gather the small tinder that is needed to start a fire.  Make sure you place all piles of wood and tinder far enough away from the flames so that they won’t accidentally start a fire.  Hopefully you will already be somewhere there is a fire pit, or have brought your own. You can also have fun collecting pretty rocks for your fire pit; a variety of sizes are going to be needed.

Speaking of rocks, go on a rock hunting expedition. Unless it is prohibited by the campground, rocks make a fine souvenir from your camping trip.  Once home with them you can start a special rock garden with rocks from all your trips.  One suggestion is to have a small backpack in which to collect the rocks in as you go on hikes. Rocks can be used for a lot of different kinds of entertainment; including a primitive game my friends and family simply call “Rock.” You need to play in teams of three.  One person throws a very large rock, one so big it takes both hands to throw it.  It can be thrown in any direction, down a hill, behind more rocks, or trees, anywhere.  The other two players each have smaller rocks, about three to five pounds in weight.  Taking turns they each throw their smaller rock at the already thrown big rock.  If a player hits it, they get a point.  If both players with the smaller rocks miss the big rock then the big rock thrower gets a
