How to make Cinco De Mayo costumes for children

Children love dressing up in costumes, and they are always looking for a reason to dress up. Cinco de Mayo presents itself as one of those days that children can dress up in different costumes that represent the Mexican culture. Here are a few ideas on how to make Cinco de Mayo costumes for children.

Little Mariachi

For boys a Mariachi is a great costume, but girls can dress as a mariachi too. It can be expensive finding Spanish embroidered material, so simplifying the costume is the best way to go for kids. For boys, dress him in a white shirt with a black jacket, red bow tie and sash, a pair of black slacks, boots and a sombrero. Giving them a pair of maracas, or a guitar to carry will complete the ensemble. A girls costume is very similar, but instead of slacks, and boots, they can substitute with a long black skirt, and black sandals.

Little Amigo

This is a simple costume to make for boys. Boys dress up in a white t-shirt, slacks and boots. By adding a colorful poncho, and sombrero to this outfit they are immediately dressed in a Mexican theme amigo costume. You can even draw a little mustache on his face, or find a fake one at a local party supply store. Also, try picking a poncho that has bright colors and patterns which are typically seen in Mexican tapestries.

Little Senorita

Girls will look absolutely cute in this costume. Find a long frilly black, red, or white skirt with a matching top. The top should be a fitting tank top or a blouse that has frills at the shoulders. Adding a pair of matching dress shoes, and tying the hair up in a matching hair ribbon will do nicely. If you want a different hair piece, then add a few silk roses to a hair comb or clip, and attach it at the top of a ponytail, or up-do hair style.

Little Mexican Dancer

Little girls love this costume, and it's very easy to make. Choose a long flowing brightly colored skirt, and a blouse that has an elastic neckline and ruffles at the arm sleeve. For those of you that know how to sew or stitch, you can add some colorful accents by stitching colorful ribbons to the edges of the blouse and skirt. Take some of the extra ribbon, and tie the hair up in a ponytail. A comfortable pair of sandals go well with this costume.

Dressing in Cinco de Mayo costumes is really fun for children, and they will enjoy spending the entire day dressed up. Be sure the materials you choose are comfortable, and possibly bring an extra change of clothing if you venture out, just incase they decide they want to change clothes. Most of all have fun, and let them enjoy getting dressed up in clothing from the Mexican culture.
