The true face of daily Evil.
Is there an evil component to the disease of addiction? Addictions are one of the greatest scourges of today’s society. And to watch the devastation that being a drug addict brings into the lives of those involved brings tears to my eyes. The greatest and first victim of this evil we call addiction is the honesty between the people involved. It is not possible for an addict to function as an active drug addict without being dishonest with all of the people who are closest to him. This dishonesty can be as simple as omitting the truth when asked to direct lying to secure the drug that the addict is consumed by. For that is exactly what this evil disease of addiction is, it is the total and complete consumption of the addict by the drug(s) that he has fallen prey to.
The honesty that most of society relies upon to function on a day to day basis is the very first victim of the addicts abuse of the drug that he has chosen. Or the drug that has chosen the addict. While there are many victims of the addict’s dishonesty, the honesty is the first. For as we all know the addict takes the first pill, the pill takes a pill and then thirdly, the pill takes the addict and all too often never gives him back. For it is a terminal disease. And once the pill or potion has the addict in its clutches it is seldom that we ever get him back. It isn’t as if the addict makes a conscious choice to lie to all the loved ones in his life, it’s that the addict doesn’t know any other way to achieve his high while being honest with those that see the destruction in his life. And those that are closest to the addict cannot for the life of them understand how this otherwise regular guy can be so blatantly dishonest when it comes to the pill or potion in his life. It is the very nature of the addict to lie, cheat or steal to achieve that ultimate high that the addict is forever chasing. And it is a losing race!
Drug addicts are just like you, only that they have an inability to stop themselves when it comes to substances that allow the addict to reach a high that “helps” the addict purportedly deal with his daily life. Addicts are not aware that perfectly regular people rise each morning and move through their day and retire to bed that night without the assistance of any chemical substances to alter their reality. It isn’t possible, not from an addict’s point of view. So when asked to abstain from the very substance that the addict feels gives them “life” it is considered impossible. Addicts cannot believe that it is done every day by thousands of people. Thereby enslaving themselves as long as they are consumed by the addiction. So is addiction an evil? It is the very definition of evil.
Until he can find that happy “norm” between his substance use and abuse, and the complete abstinence from that substance; he cannot find the desire required to get through the day. It is the most insidious aspect of drug abuse that it becomes a requirement for just getting through the day, when it is exactly the opposite that is true. Only when he can find that peace that is required to completely abstain from substance abuse will he truly be honest, happy and free. Is addiction evil? Well what do you think?
