The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger is by far one of the best books I've read in a while. This book tells the amazing story of Clare and Henry and the great love that they share together. Henry is a time traveler and he has not control over when he's going to travel or when and where he is going to travel to and Clare is just a normal person, like the rest of us. Clare is often finding herself alone as Henry travels through time without her.
The book switches back and forth between Clare and Henry so you can really get in touch with what they are both feeling and thinking at any given moment. They go through many problems that all married couples go through but most of these problems are very unique, as you can imagine, because of Henry's time traveling.
Clare meets Henry for the first time when she is only 6 years old but it's a Henry from the future so when she finally meets him in real time Henry has no idea who she is. Clare knows almost from the start that she will someday be married to Henry but when she meets Henry in real time he has no idea. However, Henry soon realizes that Clare is the one for him and proposes.
Henry eventually finds a doctor who believes that he can travel through time and his doctor is able to figure out why he time travels and attempt to find a cure. They realize that there are certain things that trigger Henry's time traveling episodes such as drinking alcohol and stress. Sometimes a Henry from the future comes to visit Henry in the present or Henry from the present goes back to visit a past Henry. Sometimes Henry has to go back and relive tragic moments from his past such as the day his mother died when he was a little boy. Henry can't prevent anything bad from happening, all he can do is watch.
They soon decide to have a baby and after 6 miscarriages, 2 doctors, and a vasectomy they finally achieve their goal of having a happy, healthy baby girl. But guess what, she's a time traveler too.
The story of Clare and Henry is truly amazing and makes you never want to put it down. After reading some of the things that Henry and Clare go through it really makes me think about my own relationship and makes me appreciate what I've got.
