Tarot: Understanding the meaning of the Six of Swords

by Carole Somerville

Created on: March 01, 2010

Travel is related to the Six of Swords. On or over water, to foreign locations. ~ A time of rest and respite is ahead and peaceful surroundings are indicated when this card appears in a tarot reading.

Symbolism in the Six of Swords ~

This card shows a shadowy figure in a boat containing six upright swords being poled towards a misty horizon. This suggests the querent is just about to leave a difficult situation behind and happily, they will be moving towards a better one.

New insights and opportunities for better and clearer understanding lie ahead of them. This is a card which helps they find their true path in life. It clarifies their position by cutting away confusion and doubts. The illustration just given implies that they have just made their choice, or they are about to make it. Their free will is being exercised.

Predictions in the Six of Swords ~

Although the Sword cards often represent conflict or anxiety, this is one of the nicest of these cards. Why is it such a good card? Well, it suggests that the person for whom it has appeared is moving away from troubled times.

They can soon leave their problems behind them as a new and happier chapter is about to begin. Now this card does signify movement, sometimes over water. So it could also be that travel is possible.

This may have something to do with their work, or perhaps a short holiday is all that's needed to give them the chance to recharge their batteries and see things from a different angle.

The Future in the Six of Swords ~

Over the next few weeks, the qurerent should try looking at things as they actually are, and not as they would like them to be. It's important for them to be realistic and to talk to others and share their hopes and ideas.

If changes are to be made, then perhaps they'll start to recognise how to go about this in a practical way.

What this card is basically suggesting is a sense of release after difficult times. Their life has reached a turning point and better and bluer skies are ahead. Nonetheless, they themselves have played a part in reaching this more successful time.

Success comes through hard work. Difficulties are overcome through accepting and facing up to challenges. They've earned this break so do enjoy it.

Six of Swords Reversed ~

When this card appears reversed in a spread, a degree of uncertainty exists, perhaps because this is a time of decision making. Some matters won't be easily resolved but the querent should try to remember that negative feelings will only get in the way of their future happiness
