This article looks at some of the most flattering hairstyles for fine hair. It includes hairstyles suited to those with thin, fine hair and hairstyles for those with an abundant amount of fine hair.
Flattering hairstyles for thin, fine hair:
If your hair is fine, but lacking in quantity it has a tendency to look limp and sit flat against your head. The goal here is to increase the visual appearance of overall volume. There are three key hairstyles that will achieve this.
The first is to simply blow dry your hair with the aim of creating big hair. After shampooing and conditioning your hair with volume building products, blow dry each section dry using a large round bristle brush. The larger the brush, the more volume you can attempt to build. Once you have dried off all the hair, flip your head upside down and give it a blast from underneath. When you flip your head back over, you should have much more volume. Only very gently put the hair back into place, because you don’t want to smooth down the volume you just created. If you find your hair dropping during the course of the day, once again flip your head over, and brush or finger comb, before returning upright.
The second is to create texture through curls or waves. The thinner your hair, the bigger the roller should be, because this will create a larger, bouncier curl and hence the appearance of fuller hair. For as much volume roll the roller as close to the scalp as possible and position the roller under the hair rather than on top of it.
The third is to use your layers or ends to create interest. Take a flat iron, or hot air tool and wrap the ends of your hair around them to achieve a flicked out look. This will help make your hair look fuller around the face, which will reduce the appearance of that stringy look.
Flattering hairstyles for abundant fine hair:
If you have an abundant amount of fine hair it tends to look flyaway and out of control in the mid lengths to ends, but often still sits limply against the scalp. The goal here is to add volume close to the roots of the hair, but tame the flyaway nature of the rest of your hair.
To create volume at the roots of the hair try creating a zig zag part. This is a part that features small sections of hair going in opposite directions. You take a tail comb and pick up tiny pieces and place them in opposition. This automatically adds a little height to the top of your hair. Don’t worry if it doesn’t sit perfectly smooth, this will help it to look natural rather than contrived and if you tried smoothing it down, you would most likely lose your volume.
Alternatively you could try putting a few rollers in the top of your hair, not rolled up but pinned in place with the top section of hair over them. Blow dry over this section and allow to cool before removing the rollers.
Other ways to create volume at the roots include, backcombing with a teasing comb and taking sections of hair from the top layer of the head and blow drying them in the opposite way to how your roots sit.
Abundant fine hair can also benefit from curly or wavy hairstyles because they can give the hair more structure by grouping together those fine strands. Apply a stay put product to your hair before creating each curl, than spray with hairspray when you are finished to help the hairs stay in place for as long as possible. Or you might like to try plaiting the hair when it is wet and then undoing the plait when it is dry for some softly grouped waves.
Other structured up do’s can also work well for abundant fine hair, because you have lots of hair to play with. Try messy buns and ponytails.
Remember to take care with products when styling fine hair, because they can easily weight the hair down and make it look greasy and lank. Look for lightweight products and use them in moderation.
If you have thin, fine hair you will probably find that you need to wash your hair virtually every day to create adequate volume. However if you have abundant fine hair, you will probably find it easier to control when you only was it every few days, because the buildup of oils will help it stay put more. You might like to use a dry shampoo and teasing comb on the roots to help give them renewed volume each day.
