Making prayer work

Man’s allegiance to God is often measured in terms of prayers being answered.  If prayers are answered, the usual response is "God exists, God is good, and God is all powerful… He is my God." etc. But when prayers do not seem to be answered it is usually the opposite scene. "God does not exist.  He is only a figment of one’s imagination.  If He loved us, then He would provide for us, take care of all our needs and see that we are not in danger.  There is no God who really cares for us.  Perhaps there really is no God.  It is only an ideology that people use to manipulate the masses"… and so on.

Every one of us at some point of our lives question ourselves or the principles of our Christian faith that we have been brought up with.  "Why doesn’t God answer my prayers?"  Reflecting upon Scripture passages and going through the lives of Biblical characters that have walked with God, we can arrive at a few reasons why our prayers are not answered or what some of the conditions are that we have to comply with in order to make our prayers to our Lord work.

# 1. Come away and be filled with God’s presence

When God directed Moses to climb up to Mount Horeb, symbolized by the 'burning bush', He set him apart to fellowship with Him.  When Moses came down from the mountain, the presence of the Lord went with him.  There was no denying that he was filled with grace and the Spirit, or the presence of God.  His fellowship with the Lord is seen by the innumerable accounts of miracles; the Ten Plagues, bread and water in the desert, to name a few.  Of course, one of the most notable to be ever mentioned is the parting of the Red Sea.  A repeat scenario can be seen when Moses went up to Mount Sinai and the Lord gave him the Ten Commandments. The Israelites could not look upon him, for his countenance reflected the presence of the Lord. Moses would pray on behalf of the people and the Lord would respond.

When Jesus took three disciples with Him and went up on top of the mountain, for the scene of the transfiguration, we see that He was filled with the presence of God, where the voice of God is heard, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.  Listen to Him."  Scripture describes the transfiguration as "And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white". (Matthew 17: 1-9)
