For My Daughter
Ever since you were a little girl, I've taught you
That it's okay to take the road less traveled,
To show the world that you are a unique person
not given to following conventional paths just because
they are the most probable or the most acceptable.
I have taught you
To accept and believe in yourself
As the person you are,
And to do the same with others you meet along the way.
I want you to seize dreams I never dared to,
To experience life in the fullest,
And believe that if you truly want to,
You can reach out and touch the moon and stars.
But, did I remind you to carry a flashlight on your journeys,
So that within the mist of darkness,
You will always be able to see the palm of my open hand,
Waiting...
To grasp yours,
And lead you safely home once again.
