Although Ireland is a relatively small country, it can tale quite some time to drive from place to place. This article offers some suggestions on how to make that experience memorable, rather than stressful.

For many visitors the challenge of driving on the left hand side of the road is immense. Ironically, this is less evident on the newer motorways and main roads, since segregated lanes make it more difficult to accidently drive onto the wrong side. There are two main challenges for visiting drivers:

- Junctions
- Roundabouts

At an open junction, some tired visiting drivers may make a turn, unintentionall ending up on the wrong side of the road. This simple maxim might help: "When turning right - keep wide". When turning left, keep tight".

Irish roundabouts are difficult, because the traffic often flows through at a fast pace. The basis of priority is that traffic on the roundabout has priority over traffic entering.  This can be useful if you miss your turn - simply continue around again for a second try! It is customary to signal off the roundabout, ie., to indicate with your left indicator just before you exit the roundabout. Some roundabouts have two lanes; if you're not going to an immediate exit, you should use the right hand lane.


'N' or National Roads

'N' roads connect all the major cities of Ireland and are single carriageway routes, usually with a 'hard shoulder'. The latter is theoretically intended as an emergency lane but, in practice, is used as an overtaking facility. Vehicles being overtaken have the unofficial option of easing into these lanes, allowing overtaking vehicles more space. However, while this is often the custom, there are implications:

- it is possible to hit stationary vehicles in the hard shoulder; in which case you would be liable
- the hard shoulder is often dusty and debris-strewn, sometimes causing punctures

If you are sure you can avoid both dangers, then feel free to make life easier for the vehicle behind you.


The Real Driving Pleasure of Ireland

While motorways and 'N' roads are useful for a fast passage, the most enjoyable driving experience is to take the huge network of minor roads and enjoy lightly-trafficked routes, and stunning views. It is well worth investing in a good local map, where you can plot a leisurely route and enjoy the countryside.
