There are some creative and cheap ways to divide a room when you don’t have excess money to invest in a partition, or your residence is not going to be permanent. For example, when you are renting an apartment and want to define areas for specific purposes, but wish to remove the room divider when you relocate.
Cheap and easy room divider ideas:
* Bookcases
Two identical bookcases, placed back-to-back, makes a nice room divider with shelves in both of the separate areas. This works well when you want to divide a living room from a dining area, or to separate the dining area from a connecting kitchen.
The shelves on both sides can be utilized for storage and decorative items. If you want to limit visibility, use six foot bookcases; if you desire a more open look, use three foot high bookcases.
If you opt for a single bookcase divider, use the back side to display prints or photos that complement the room.
* Curtains
A curtain is an inexpensive, practical way to divide a room. This is especially effective in a bedroom. You can use a sheet that coordinates with your bedding. Slide a rod into the bottom hem for weight, so your fabric divider will hang straight and firm. This type of divider works well for a bedroom with two occupants, such as siblings, who might each want their own space clearly defined.
* Bamboo shade
Affix a bamboo shade from the ceiling, which can be rolled down for privacy, or rolled up when you want to open up the space. Bamboo shades work well because while they act as an effective divider, light comes through and gives the room an airy feeling.
* Stacked cinderblocks
Cinderblocks are a cost-effective way to build a partial wall to divide a room into two distinct spaces. The blocks are sturdy and can be stacked to any desired height. This is an effective way to divide a living and dining area with creative flair. Check out the variety of colors and design available at your local Home Depot.
* Plants
A row of potted plants, real or artificial, makes a great room divider. Their lush, green appearance also enhances any decorating theme.
One of my favorite ideas for a room divider using plants is to place two stepladders, back-to-back to form a pyramid shape. Place plants on each rung of the ladders and you have an effective room divider that is also an attractive conversation piece of decorating genius.
* Folding screens
You can either purchase a ready made folding screen, or, if you have DIY talent, fashion one out of plywood, corkboard, pegboard or any other lightweight material and some inexpensive hinges from the hardwood store.
You can use your folding screen to display artwork, photos, or if you are artistically inclined, paint your own mural.
* Furniture
A room can be divided nicely by using a parson’s table or a desk, extending out from the wall. Or you can place a table behind a couch, extending out from the wall. In a bedroom, a dresser or desk can be used as a room divider.
Room dividers are also versatile methods of decorating long, narrow rooms.
These are just a few ideas for cheap room dividers to enhance your living space. I am sure with some creative thinking, you can come up with a few more ideas for defining your space without breaking the budget.
