Catching up with old friends

The excitement that occurs when you have set a date to catch up with old friends could very well be short lived as I was soon to find out. I have just had this very experience happen to me. I found one of my closest and dearest friends from school through the friends reunited website and we had set a date to meet for coffee at a mutual meeting ground. The time apart had been over ten years and I had butterflies in my tummy every time I though about our meeting. The morning of the meeting I took great care in my appearance, "Did I look fat? Do I look the same?" were some of the thoughts that were racing around my head. I arrived at the coffee shop early, in anticipation of hoping to rekindle our friendship. When she arrived, she looked the same, but I was soon to find out that the looks were the only thing that were the same. Small talk started the conversation, then we went on the talk about our husbands and children. I spoke about my husband playing football and my daughter who plays soccer, that was when I realized that we no longer had anything in common. Her response was, "I can't stand men that play football, they are so rude and arrogant, and who would ever let their little girl play soccer, soccer is only for boys." I found it hard to concentrate the rest of the morning as I was very concious of her putting me down at every opportunity available, and any comment I made there was a negative comment in return. When the meeting I felt releaved and now I know that your best friends do not have to be your oldest freinds, people do grow apart and grow up but life goes on and good friends will grow with you.
