Why is spring the time for love?

Spring has become synonymous with love. It's a new life from a long drawn out death we all know as Winter. Literally and figuratively its a new beginning. A chance to break out from the “mental confines” of “cabin fever.” Winters long, bitterly cold, barren days of little daylight pushes our tolerance to the limit like a relative that has overstayed their welcome. We are all happy to see winter's first snow, but we are even happier to see it leave by seasons end. Spring is like a childhood friend with many great memories that you never grow tired of seeing. The birds are chirping, the flowers are in bloom and the days are getting longer. The depressing, stagnant, gray skies of winter are replaced by the warm, blue sunny skies of spring which seem to animate the landscape. Shakespeare once wrote, “ April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” How true this seems to be as we watch the tree's dancing in the wind as their new leaves capture the wind like sails above a flowing sea of grass. The sound of children playing, birds singing, squirrels rustling in the trees and the beauty of a butterfly perched on a flower. To see nature in all her glory and splendor, how can we not help but want to fall in love?

The spring sun seems to awaken the “hibernating bear” in us all, as its warm embrace fills us with energy. We all remember when we were children and how much we loved spring. Being able to get out of the house and ride your bike, fly a kite and play with your friends. So much energy, excitement and happiness, but as we get older are focus becomes less about play and more about finding a mate. Natures call to replenish the earth in all her beauty are inherent withing all life and we are no exception. The sun is known to release endorphins in our brain which are chemically similar to morphine. Natures “natural high”, a euphoric state of mind which is conducive for the seeking out of a mate. The spring sun fills us full of energy, happiness, confidence and optimism, as nature sets its “euphoric trap.” And even though we are intelligent enough to understand it, we all fall victim to it anyway. Thus the old saying, “Love is blind” and “The heart wants what the heart wants.”

We have all at one point in our lives, fallen for someone that wasn't exactly good for us. A relationship that you or your friends and family could not explain. An incompatible match that seemed to defy all logic. Looking back on the origins of the relationship, you may be surprised to find that you met that person in the spring. That you were a victim of springs “euphoric trap.” A chemically induced love by virtue of nature's will. Logically we may find it hard to understand or fight natures “chemical trappings”, but at the very least we all can take solace in knowing that, “its better to have loved and lost then to never loved at all.”
