Movie reviews: American Pie Presents, Band Camp

by Iain Wilson

Created on: February 25, 2010

American Pie: Band Camp was released straight to DVD in 2005, directed by Steve Rash. It has a runtime of approximately 94 minutes and is available on Amazon.co.uk for around £2.

~~~ Synopsis ~~~
Matt Stifler gets sent to band camp after he gets caught for one of his pranks and as you would expect stands out like a sore thumb. After a while Matt learns that he has to get on the side of the "bandeez" is he is to make it through the summer.
~~~ My Opinion ~~~

Being the first spin-off movie from the proper American Pie trilogy it had a lot to live up to. The cast in particular had a tough job or trying to replace the proper cast featuring Jason Biggs.

Tad Hilgenbrink does and excellent job of getting the Stifler mannerisms right and the delivery of his lines is reminiscent of Seann William Scott as Steve Stifler. However, he doesn't have the same charisma or likeability factor as Steve and this lets down the role a little. I would put this more down to the way this character has been written, rather than Hilgenbrink's performance.

The rest of the original cast don't really have direct replacements, but the other main characters in Band Camp don't have the same appeal as the original and just don't work together as well as a collective group. There is one surviving cast member though and that is of course Jim's dad, Mr. Levenstein. being the only one to appear in all the movie he has become somewhat of a cult figure.

The story itself is pretty good and exactly what you would expect from and American Pie movie. Although not quite as good as the first three, it will still hold most American Pie fans attention, with the usual mixture of naked women and misguided experiments.

Overall this is a decent movie. It isn't the greatest, but I'm still pleased that it was made. It was a good decision not to name it American Pie 4, because that would have brought down the reputation of the others. Instead opting for a new line of movies in the 'Presents:' section.

Eugene Levy ... Mr. Levenstein
Tad Hilgenbrink ... Matt Stifler (as Tad Hilgenbrinck)
Arielle Kebbel ... Elyse
Jason Earles ... Ernie
Crystle Lightning ... Chloe (as Crystle Lea Lightning)
Jun Hee Lee ... Jimmy
Matt Barr ... Brandon Vandecamp
Chris Owen ... Sherman

Summary: 7 / 10
