How to improve your metabolism

Created on: February 23, 2010

There are several easy ways you can increase or improve your metabolism.  Many of the ways to increase metabolism are simple things that many people do not even realize can cause them to have decreased energy levels.  If you feel sluggish during the day, or have trouble keeping weight off despite dieting, understanding these metabolic facts will help to both boost your energy levels during the day and allow you to lose weight more easily.  In almost all situations, there is no reason to take dangerous supplements to increase your metabolism as the cause of slow metabolism is either cause by basic nutrition or exercise deficiencies, or else is caused by a medical condition that will need to be treated.  The most important thing to remember as far as increasing your metabolism is to do it in a healthy way.

One thing that is not understood very well by the average person is the critical and important role that water plays in metabolism.  Water is an essential part not only of metabolism, but also of the function of several other systems that can impact energy levels.  Water molecules are needed in every part of metabolism starting from absorption of nutrients from the small intestines all the way to where glucose molecules are turned into pure energy.  Dehydration at any step of the metabolic cycle will cause decreased levels of energy to be produced.  Water is also a vital part of the nervous system and dehydration can cause fatigue not only because of poor metabolism, but because of poor brain functioning.

Another simple thing that individuals can do to increase metabolism is change some eating habits.  You can increase metabolism and weight loss without actually cutting down on the amount of food you eat.  The secret here is to shift your calories to earlier in the day.  Breakfast and lunch should be the two biggest meals you eat, and don´t worry about having a healthy snack between them.  By consuming your carbohydrates in the morning, you allow the energy they release to be available when you are awake.  Consuming most of your calories at dinnertime results in that energy being available when you are asleep.  Also, despite the claims of fad diets, carbohydrates are not your enemy.  They are necessary for a high metabolism and if your body does not get them, it will greatly decrease your metabolism in response.  When possible, try to get your carbohydrates early
