The one factor that will help you in improving your Chess skills, is practice. Like anything, practice makes perfect, and the more you study and practice your Chess, the better you will become at it. Chess sharpens the mind and helps you to think logically and tactically too. And with this in mind it is imperative that you begin any game of Chess with a good solid 'Opening'. Study Chess Books for ideas on how to improve your game, from Beginning to Middle and then End. Learn how to maximize each of your pieces power and also, as you do this, and as you play through each game, become tactically aware too.
Understand where each piece is on the board, {not only your own pieces, but that of your opponents too}. Try and think ahead. This is one of the hardest things to do when trying to improve your game, but it is imperative that you learn this skill. Again, this is all about becoming tactically aware . Soon enough once you have mastered that, you will soon learn to which squares you can maximize your pieces the most. I have noticed that with most beginners of the game they tend to play blind {that is to say that they are completely unaware of what their opponent is doing, or what he or she may have planned}.
I have also noticed that those trying to improve their Chess, seem to place their pieces toward the side of the board, again, this is a huge error. Your pieces { especially Knights, and Bishops} should control the CENTRE of the board. This then releases more squares for them to attack or defend {whatever the case may be}. Begin with one solid Pawn Opening {For White, this is normally King's Pawn to King 4}.
This means that all you are doing is moving your Pawn that is in front of your King, forward by two squares. This then opens up and releases the squares for the White King's Bishop, and also the White Queen too. You will normally find that a good player will then try and attack your King's Pawn with a Knight move, {Black} King's Knight to King Bishop 5.
Black's Knight is now attacking your White King's Pawn {which must be protected} So your move will probably follow as thus: Queen's Knight to Queen Bishop 4. This move means that White's Knight is now protecting and defending your King's Pawn that is on King 4. With this solid opening basis it is imperative that you know exactly what you are doing, and where your pieces should be {this goes for Black as well as White. Some say that playing
