Marshmallow Peeps should be eaten only in the late spring when they are most ripe. The best form of them is in the form of a yellow chick. You may see different forms of them floating around at various points of the year, but do not be fooled. Do not listen to those who insist that Peeps should be removed from their boxes and allowed to harden - this is heresy, pure and simple. Peeps should be enjoyed as fresh and ripe as you would enjoy any other holiday treat. To be most thoroughly enjoyed, a Marshmallow Peep must be eaten in its purest form. Once you have secured a package of Marshmallow Peeps you should follow these steps to ensure the proper eating of this luxurious treat:
1) Remove one Peep from its home in the box. Place it in the microwave and watch it expand to 3-5 times its normal size. Remove from microwave, marvel at its ability expand to such a size and then toss it in the garbage.
2)Remove one more Peep from its home in the box. Bite off the beak. This may sometimes be difficult to find, as it is simply a protrudence of marshmallow somewhere on the chick’s face.
3) Using your fingernail, scrape off the brown spots that are the Peep’s eyes. These are not yellow Marshmallow, and as such ruin the purity of the Peep.
4) Bite off the Peep’s head. This may seem cruel. However, it will prevent the Peep from having any sort of traumatic feeling of the injuries that are being incurred as you devour the rest of its body.
5) Thoroughly enjoy that first full bite of Marshmallow-y goodness.
6) Place the rest of the Peep in your mouth and enjoy.
7) Smile contentedly to yourself and reach for the next Peep in the box.
8) Be sure that any and all extraneous bits of Easter basket grass have been picked off of the Peep.
9) Repeat steps 2-8 until all of the Peeps have been properly enjoyed.
Marshmallow Peeps are an annual treat that should be enjoyed as best as they can be. This is especially true for all of those people who have given up sweets for Lent, and this Peep will be the first bit of sugary goodness they have had in weeks. If you are a true Peep lover and believe in the purity of this treat, be sure to join the Peeps fan club to keep this delicious tradition alive.
