Poetry: Demons

by Shen-Li Lee

Created on: February 23, 2010

Ominous shadows everywhere I turn,

Alarming, looming, threatening, shocking.

To run away and escape is what I yearn,

Absconding, fleeing, flying, eloping.

Darkness swallows me - I cannot breathe,

Suffocating, stifling, smothering, choking.

I’ve done what they want, why won’t they leave?

Lamenting, crying, howling, weeping,

Hovering in my mind, there is no reprieve,

Recurring, unvarying, unremitting, unceasing.

To think I could hide - oh! I was so naïve.

To think I’d be free – oh! I was so unwitting.

Haunting, lingering, agonising, torturing,

These demons of mine, live on in my head.

Undying, enduring, unwavering, ongoing,

There’ll be no escape, not until I’m dead!
