It almost seems that when you ask such a question that you divide people into two groups. There are the hopeless romantics and the ones in successful relationships. I firmly admit that the idea of a pre-destined partner for everyone in their life sounds amazing and extremely comforting but its not reality.
Of the many arguments I have had with myself over the idea of love at first sight or catching the muse of my future, I have settled on one distinct flaw in the idea of a soul-mate. Wikipedia defines soul-mate as a someone with whom you have deep spiritual, emotional, or sexual connection with. But also that they are the other half of your soul. Also known as your twin soul or twin flame. Honestly the idea sounds a little intimidating, but if your were to search for such a person, how would you know where to look or what to look for.
Lets just take myself for example. I'm young American white male that speaks English and I'm looking for one person. The Earth's census thus far for 2010 is about 6,804,000,000. Of that 6,804,000,000 about 3,200,000,000 are women. But even then three billion women is a huge haystack. Now lets take into consideration my language. I think it's safe to say that your soul mate would speak the same language as you do. English is the official language in over 50 countries and spoken by almost two billion people. Now since the ratio of men to women is just about half lets take half of that two billion speaking population and divide by half. So now I'm down to one billion English speaking women to choose from. I live in the United States and only a little over 215,000,000 people speak English including men. So just by living in the USA Ive cut 75% of the English speaking women in this world with whom could be my soul-mate. So you tell me how likely it is that a person would have one much less find them.
With those kind of odds feel safer in just making a educated decision when it comes to my intimate relationships. In every relationship there will always be a level of intimacy and affection, love and adoration. But it's trial and error to find someone with whom your best compatible with and thus have the greatest advantage to having a long fruitful and productive relationship. And if your truly a person who believes in a soulmate, well then congratulations on finding them because the odds for me are about 1:1,000,000,000. I'm not a gambler but those are not good odds. Happy Hunting
