From under his helmet, he saw her that morning, walking hurriedly to the hospital gate.
How could he not have remembered those broad shoulders — something about them describes her. It was how she carried herself, like she knew what she was doing, whatever it was, he will soon find out. A big responsibility though, it seemed. But at the same time, her hunched shoulders made him sense that she was not alright. Of course, because otherwise, they couldn’t have
met rather distastefully the other night.
Well, he thought, at least there’s a reason for me to look forward to these site visits.
It was on Thursday when he got to the site earlier than usual. He parked his motorcycle, took off his helmet, and somehow had the impulse to fix his hair with his fingers.
Then there she was walking towards his direction, and though he spent the last two days rehearsing how he would approach her, his mind suddenly went blank. Just when she stood right in front of him, he didn’t know what to say.
“Uy, you work here?” she did sound like she was a little happy to see him, but he realized he shouldn’t assume anything.
“Ah…yes,” was all he could say, wondering, What on earth is wrong with me?
She nodded and smiled. “Sige, I have to go.”
Come on, think of something! He struggled with himself.
“Take care…” he said as she started to walk away. You can’t do anything better than that, can you, you numbwit! He really blew it.
She turned, and the way her pony tailed hair swayed when she did took his breath away. She smiled, and that was more than enough for him to hold on to.
“Looks like our architect has got somethin’ going on for that nurse…” one of the hard-hat guys teased. He tried to keep a straight face.
Late that afternoon, he waited. It was getting dark when he finally saw her walking out the gate.
You better get your act together, Allan. He was determined this time.
“Hi, on your way home?” was hoping for a reply, with fingers crossed.
“Ah, yes,” though she smiled, he knew she felt uneasy that he came on too familiar.
“Ako si Allan,” was really hoping for a reply…and yes, this time, with both fingers crossed.
“Alice,” and with this, she began to fill his life with happiness.
