Fun places to go in Orlando, FL

Orlando, FL is one of the best vacation destinations in the country! While the area is famous for the theme parks and beaches, there are many fun and exciting things to do in the area that are not usually part of your standard vacation package. If it's "Fun in the Sun" that you are looking for, and you want something a little bit different, read on.

To get started, you are going to want to have some basic items. First off, you will need some way of navigating your way around. While the best choice would obviously be a GPS system, most of the locations I will be discussing are not very hard to find so, a map of the area will do just fine.  Second, it might me a good idea to pack a cooler with drinks and snacks, especially if you are bringing the kids along. Most of the locations in this article are about an hour drive from Orlando. Finally, make sure you have your camera! Florida's natural and historical beauty is stunning and you are going to want a few pictures.

OK, let's get started! One of the things The Sunshine State is best known for is it's abundance of wild life. Central Florida is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish. Sure, you could spend a day at Sea World Orlando seeing these creatures in captivity or, you could head out to one of the many State Parks and see them in their natural habitats. Two of my favorite destinations are Blue Springs State Park and De Leon Springs State Park. Both of these parks are located on the famous St. John's River in Volusia County. Blue Springs has the largest natural spring in the state and some of the best spots to see Florida's natural creatures. The crystal clear water reveals an abundance of fish and turtles as well as the beautiful underwater foliage. Alligators and otters are also among the native animals that call this park home. In the winter, hundreds of West Indian Manatees migrate to the spring to enjoy the 72 degree water.  Deleon Springs is a little farther north, but well worth the drive. This park features a huge swimming pool built around the spring. There is also an 1800's sugar mill, a free museum and a very good restaurant inside the park. Both of these locations are loaded with natural beauty, native wild life and are rich in history. Both locations were home to Florida's Native American Indians and the area's first settlers. Admission to these parks is $5 a car. Find out more about these Florida State Parks and over 150 others
