Butterfly

Once I had such a beautiful butterfly
Who was independent and knew where she wanted to go
I found her through hardship and fought earnestly
To win the heart of my butterfly, of whom I wanted to know.

Spreading those wings of magnificent color
Stretching them out as far as she could
Took to the sky, ascended with valor
And I knew that she always would.

I'd watch her in motion, swelling with pride
Appreciating the admiration and love that she gave
But now that it has gone, it's my sadness and guilt that I hide
That I let go of my magnificent butterfly, and now memories I save

Still seeing my butterfly I long to watch her spread those wings again
But she's no longer mine; caught by another flying free she soars
Out of my view, soaring through sun wind and rain
Looking back she smiles, stares for a while then up and away she roars.
