“No you’re wrong! That can’t be my future, I don’t accept it! There’s no future for me without Pete in it!”
Anne wasn’t what Mia expected a fortune teller to be like in so many ways. First, she didn’t wear caftans, turbans and lots of cheap gold jewelry. She didn’t have a middle European accent either. Nor did she try to seduce Mia into a fortune telling session with promises of telling her future and her love-life. Also, they didn’t meet in the usual way one met a fortune teller. Instead Anne was a smart, neat, short woman who dressed with a sophisticated flair, wore her short dark hair curly and was very soft spoken. Anne also had the largest black eyes Mia had ever seen and they always seemed shiny like they were filling with tears. Mia met Anne when she was a patient in the medical practice Mia worked for.
During the many months Mia was providing physical therapy for Anne, they would have conversations about various things. One day Mia mentioned a dream she had about her mother; a horrible terrifying dream about her mother having a heart attack in the bathtub and dying. Anne immediately told Mia that the dream was not true and was certainly not a premonition; her mother was not going to die of a heart attack. She said it so matter of factly and with such conviction, that Mia was taken aback. That began many other conversations, and during each one, Anne revealed something about Mia’s life that Anne couldn’t possibly know. She described Mia’s niece accurately, described her father’s personality and more.
One day Mia asked Anne what she did for a living and Anne told her she was a psychotherapist. Mia chuckled and said “I thought you were going to say you were a psychic or fortune teller. You certainly seem to know everything about me without having any way to know those facts.” There was an uncomfortable silence for a moment or two and Mia was afraid she had insulted Anne.
“Do you believe some people posses psychic abilities Mia?”
“I believe that some people posses them, but more people who claim to are actual fakes.”
Months went by, and as Mia approached the final day of her divorce, she decided to make an official appointment with Anne for some counseling. She had so many issues around the divorce, the new love in her life, and what she should do about the fact that Pete
