How to stay positive when laid off

by Jean Sidden

Created on: February 21, 2010

Being laid off can feel like being hit with a brick. It can be a sudden blow where you're asked to clear out your things and leave immediately or it can be a long drawn out process where you anticipate the end over a period of time. However it takes place it will be in your best interest to find ways to stay positive.

Sinking in negativity during this time will be a detriment to the next steps you need to take. Negativity can lead to depression which will rob you of energy and stamina for a job search. Suddenly being laid off is about being depressed and not about moving on. If you give in to negativity you will be stopped in your tracks.

The first thing to be aware of is that you are able to redirect your thoughts. You don't have to spend your time stewing over the unfairness of your situation. Instead you can choose to see things differently. Actively looking for a more positive perspective will help you stay encouraged.

Spend time every day acknowledging the positive aspects of your situation. Yes, there really are some very significant ways your unemployed time is positive. Think of all the free time you have? Your time belongs to you now and you can spend it any way you want. No longer do you have to awaken to the horrid sound of an alarm clock.

If you felt you never had time for an exercise program, here's your chance. Are you able to spend more quality time with your children now? That's a positive aspect. Are you beginning to entertain the idea that you could do something new and exciting with your life? That's a very positive aspect. Write down what you discover and see how long the list is. Rather than being a time to be disillusioned this could be a time for you to completely reinvent yourself.

If you hadn't thought of beginning an exercise program, perhaps you should. Even a nice long walk every day is going to keep your spirits lifted. More strenuous exercise releases endorphins that will keep your mood elevated. Yoga and other forms of flexibility training will help relieve stress. Physical activity will work to your benefit, so think about including some in your day.

We've all been told that the way to get back to work is to do nothing but look for work all day every day when you're unemployed. This approach will pound the anxiety and discouragement home. Take breaks from your job search and do things you enjoy. If you have a hobby that brings you pleasure, be sure to include that in your day. The most important thing is for you to keep your spirits up so you can keep your energy and encouragement up. Distracting yourself from the grind of the job search can help you stay positive.

Loss of employment can mean a loss of our sense of well being. It is very important to do what we can to stay positive during such a challenging time. A positive attitude will reward you with increased energy and stamina to continue your job search feeling encouraged until things turn in your direction once again.
