Tips for flying comfortably

Airplane travel can take a toll on one’s body. Bloating, dehydration, indigestion, and lack of sleep are just a few of the reasons that people feel discomfort while flying. These symptoms are a result of sitting in narrow seats for extended periods of time at altitudes of 30,000 feet as well as air cabin pressure. There are ways to alleviate the discomforts of flying though. Here are some tips for staying comfortable while flying:

WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES

The clothing you wear can greatly determine your comfort during a flight. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes such as jeans, and instead opt for loose-fitting pants with a bit of stretch. The high altitudes can also cause flights to get very cold, and so you may choose to wear layers during the flight.

STAY HYDRATED

Flights can get very dry as a result of air cabin pressure, high altitudes, and the recycling of air. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring moisturizer and lip balm to alleviate dryness, and use eye drops for dry eyes.

REFRESH

Utilizing a pre-packed toothbrush and toothpaste can really help you stay refreshed while flying as well. Wet wipes are another great way to refresh and awaken after sitting for many hours.

EAT LIGHT MEALS

In-flight meals can be unpredictable. Be sure to call in advance to learn what meals may be included. You can also request special meals to fit any dietary needs you may have such as vegetarian, low-salt, diabetes, and kosher meals to name a few. Eat light, low-sodium foods during the flight to alleviate possible swelling and discomfort. Also, be sure to pack some light snacks in case your flight is delayed or if your flight does not include a meal which is often the case on shorter domestic flights.

RESERVE YOUR SEAT IN ADVANCE

Are you an aisle person or do you prefer the window? While you are calling to reserve your meal, you can also reserve your seat. You may ask for a seat near the exit if you have long legs, or you may request to sit in the front of the plane so that you can exit first when landing. You may also opt to sit in the aisle rather than by the window so that you can get up and walk around from time to time without disturbing others.

STRETCH YOUR BODY

The best way to keep your blood circulating is to stretch your muscles for ten minutes every hour. Most airplanes include an in-flight magazine or a video with suggested exercises to help the blood flow. Some ideas include head rolls, shoulder and calf raises, and arm stretches.

REST EASIER

Sleeping on an airplane can be a challenge. After all, you are sharing a small space with an average of 200 other passengers who will all be doing their own thing. If you think you may have trouble sleeping, be sure to pack an eye mask and/or ear plugs to drown out the light and noise. A neck pillow can help make tight seats more comfortable as well.

BE ENTERTAINED

Bring a magazine, a good book, or watch the in-flight movies to make the time pass by a bit quicker. Bring your own headphones to avoid airplane charges. And whatever you do, don’t watch the clock. It only makes the flight seem longer!
