Whether or not you have lucid dreams mostly depends on your desire and belief. If you desire to have lucid dreams for some specific purpose or even if you really just want to experience a lucid dream just for the novelty, you will have one. If you don't believe you can have a lucid dream, if you think it's all made up or that it's impossible for you to have a lucid dream, you probably will not end up having one. This is the power of your mind to bring circumstances into your life. There are simple ways one can encourage lucid dreams to enter his nighttime voyages.
Reality checks
Reality checks are a very good way to begin to have lucid dreams, since they work on the basis that when you think you are awake you might actually be sleeping. Some reality checks are: Reading small printed material, flicking light switches on and off, looking at your hands and counting your fingers and trying to change things with your thoughts.
The key to reality checks is to perform them as often as possible and never assume you are awake. Always check. You have to develop the habit of asking yourself. "Is this a dream?"
Lucid dream experiences
Lucid dreaming has been around for quite some time and looking up whatever information you can find in books and on the Internet will be very helpful in encouraging lucid dreams. Read lucid dream experiences online and try to find out if people you know have had lucid dreams. Basically, take an interest in dreaming in general. Become the dream expert among your friends. The more you can get into conversation about dreaming the better.
Desire
Why do you want to have a lucid dream? This is the most important part of lucid dreaming because if you know why you want to have a lucid dream and that reason is cool enough for you to get really excited about it you might just have one without even trying. Can you imagine the thing that you want to do in a lucid dream? If you can't you might become lucid and not know what to do and wake yourself up.
Lucid dreaming is something that can benefit anyone, whether you just want to use it recreationally or you are serious about diving into the depths of your subconscious mind. The most important factor in encouraging lucid dreams is your determination to have one. You might not have one soon, but are you willing to continue practicing reality checks, finding out information about dreams and such until you do?
