It is a reasonable suggestion to say that the usage of the Bible for swearing-in ceremonies and court hearings should have never been implemented in the first place. Pondering this question, I realized that the entire concept swearing-in was geared to play on a person's conscience. It is supposed to make a person feel a sense of responsibility for anything he or she may say or do.Using the Bible for swearing-in implies that there is an all-purpose trust zone for all parties involved, suggesting that everyone has morals and can be fully relied upon to be honest.
I assume it was initially thought that using the Bible would give a God-fearing person a reasonable fear of displeasing Him, because by swearing on His inspired word it would create a covenant you could say, one of truth with God himself. Going against such a promise would certainly be such a grave offense and who would really dare do that!
There is also the fact that it is used to signify in such instances God's sovereign power over all, but really people do not use it for that purpose. For them using the Bible is just a way for them imply their decisions are backed by God therefore should not be questioned, they are willing to use God's name as a means to meet whatever goal they wish to achieve whether it be attempting to suck the truth out of a person or stationing them in an office or taking part in a war,
However the greatest problem arises because this tactic is solely relying on a person's individual level of morality and them having an actual belief in the Bible or God.
Not everyone believes in God.
Thinking on the variety of beliefs lingering about in today's society it is logical to conclude everyone is different when it comes to their choice in faith and to which degree they are involved with it, some people are much more serious than others.
Calling to mind the general attitude in this modern-day and age it is evident that most people are only as dedicated and serious about their faith as their personal convenience allows. When it is time to lie, people lie. When it is time to steal, people steal. When it is time to cheat, people cheat. When it is ....well you get the point. Nine out of ten people have pretended sick to get the day off of work, others have told someone they look nice when they didn't to avoid hurting someone's
