The debate on Darwin's theory of evolution

by Jim Iholts

Created on: February 21, 2007   Last Updated: March 10, 2009

I am going to debate this topic using a different slant: the validity of using the Bible as a book on Science. After all, when I wish to understand the processes that lead to the folding or faulting of the mountains in my corner of the world I do not go to the Bible. Likewise, when I need to find my way to God I do not go to my Structural Geology book. Each book serves its purpose well and serves other purposes less than well.

I am not a biologist I am a geologist. When I was an undergrad my least favorite class was Paleontology, which is the class closest to biology. Indeed, if it weren't for Paleontology Darwin's Theory would have much less evidence behind it. I also disagree with those that state "Evolution is a fact" or that "Evolution has been proven ...". Evolution is a theory and no theory has ever been proven, that is why they are called theories. There are facts upon which Evolution is based, but that is not the same as saying that Evolution is a fact. Likewise, there are many lifeforms that went extinct during one of the five major extinctions during the Phanerozoic Era (the last 570 million years of the Earth's 4.6 billion year history). The most recent extinction occurred at the end of Mesozoic Era some 67 million years ago. The end of the dinosaurs lead to the domination of mammals during the Cenozoic Era, which is ongoing. I have never seen any reference to dinosaurs in the account of the flood of Gilgamesh (which the Jews borrowed and called Noah's flood). Likewise, the Jews took from the Code of Hammurabi: "If a man takes another man's eye, then you shall take his eye", and "If a man takes another man's tooth, then you shall take his tooth". Jesus renounced the Old Testament due to pagen preachings such at this. He preached "If a man strikes you in the cheek then you are to turn the other cheek (so that he might strike you there also)". Just as Jesus renounced the Old Testament, so should any reasonable person reject the pagen accounts found in Genesis.

If someone is truly intent on disproving the Theory of Evolution, then that person need to obtain three degrees, a Bachelors of Science Degree, a Masters of Science Degree and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree. Furthermore, many years of research are needed and that person should not expect to see anything more than the start of their quest. Anything short of this ambitious goal must me met with scrupulous doubt of the intentions of the persons asserting their claims that the Theory of Evolution lacks merit.
