Freelance writing for Demand Studios

by Jennifer Eblin

Created on: February 19, 2010

If you’ve ever visited one of the popular websites such as Trails, Travels or eHow, then you may have read an article written by one of the Demand Studios writers. Demand Studios is owned by Demand Media, which in turn owns a large number of other websites and needs writers capable of producing content. In addition to writers, the website also hires directors, editors and title proofers.

Demand Studios hires writers depending on what the company needs at any given time. A writer with experience in technical writing and mechanics may get hired on one month, while a writer with a college degree and a history of medical writing gets rejected. Wait a few months and those situations are reversed. As the content coming into the website changes, so too does the type of writers needed.

Working for Demand Studios has a number of advantages, including a guaranteed rate of pay. The company pays $15-20+ for 400 word articles. Special projects that come into the company, including those for different websites not owned by Demand Media, pay $25 and up. Articles of 200 words pay $7.50 and the company doesn’t limit the amount of work you do every day or the amount of money you make. Some writers earn $300 or more every day, while others work only part-time and make less than that each week. The amount you make depends on the amount of work you put into it.

When you write an article and submit it to the website, it goes to an editor. The editor either approves the article or sends it back for a rewrite. You have one chance to rewrite the article based on the editor’s comments and the editor then either approves or rejects the article. If the article is approved, you earn the amount listed for the article. If it’s rejected, then you earn nothing, but you do have the option of using the article elsewhere, as long as you change the title because Demand Studios retains the rites to the title.

The one thing to keep in mind when writing for Demand Studios is that you must keep your percentage of approved titles up. The company periodically checks the writer’s standings and if their rejection percentage is low, they’ll check the quality of their writing and may let the writer go. It’s one of the greatest fear of company writers, especially when new editors start rejecting articles or sending back rewrites because they don’t yet have a grasp of the style. It’s possible to make a living from Demand Studios, but keep in mind that you’ll want to work for other companies and not depend solely on one.
