If you live in the Washington D.C. area, Dischord Records (dischord.com) is a wonderful place to start. This legendary label has meticulously documented the D.C punk scene since the late 1980s. Dischord famously sells its politically-charged CDs for bare minimum prices.
Then we have the mysterious Grinding Tapes Recording Company (grindingtapes.org), a socially-conscious record label based in Boston. Grinding Tapes puts out limited and often hand-made experimental folk albums and thoroughly documents where the money you pay is going. They even list what percentage of their packaging is recycled.
Finally, I'd suggest investigating the Canadian label, Constellation Records (cstrecords.com). These Montreal folks have been championing vinyl and CD releases of neo-classical and dirty orchestral folk albums. Check out their amazing foil-stamped artwork!
