Holds cane, walks slowly
knees stiff and swollen, painful
limping, old and tired
Bent man, pleading eyes
stop it hurting, I can't move
face tight, lined by years.
X-rays black and white
show bone on bone arthritis
joints worn to nothing
we can fix your knees
with total joint replacement
you can walk pain free
bright white lights, blue drapes
saw cuts, hammer pounds, holes drilled
shiny silver parts
wound closed dressing on
waking up "is it done yet?"
recovery nurse nods
morning after pain
sick woozy knee stiff it hurts
nurse brings morphine shot
feeling better now
PT bending knee smiling
now its time to walk
swaying at bedside
white knuckles gripping walker
tentative first step
Two days later now
Walking the halls with ease
"Doc can I go home?"
at the practice range
three months later driver swings
its been far too long.
Moving without pain
Takes the grandkids to the park
Walking all the way.
