Novel excerpts: Romantic thrillers

by Jennifer Harrison

Created on: February 19, 2010

Taken from Chapter 14 of my unpublished novel, Chance Happenings

I locked my suitcase, and quickly scanned the room.  Trevor was waiting outside, and I didn't think he'd be happy waiting for long.  We were finally married, and after ten years of waiting, I knew he was anxious to get me home.

I grabbed another bag and when I walked out the door, I nearly ran straight into Trevor.  “I thought you were going to wait outside?”

Trevor smiled his charming smile.  “I didn’t want to wait out there alone.  I was worried about you.”

I laughed.  “Worried about what?  This place is safe, and besides, who’s gonna mess with me with you right outside?”  I reached for his hand but he pulled it away.

Trevor turned and went into the kitchen.  I followed him and caught a glimpse of the flashing message light a moment before he reached over and pressed play.

“Hi Cate, this is Detective Marshal again.  Look, I spoke with Steve and we really need to talk.  If we can meet sooner, that would be best, otherwise I guess we’ll see you at lunch.  In the meantime, be extremely careful.”

My heart raced as I looked from the answering machine to my husband.  I hadn’t told him anything about John.  Not even that they had made a mistake in identifying a body they thought was him.

My first reaction was to say, “I can explain,” but I couldn’t even get that out before Trevor asked, “Still feel safe?”

I stared at my husband, Trevor.  I took a step back, away from him and bumped into the wall behind me.  I thought about running away, but I didn’t even know what I was running away from.  What had the detective found, and why was Trevor acting this way?  “What’s going on?”  I asked, “Trevor?”

Trevor rolled his eyes.  “Don’t play dumb with me.  What I want to know is how you found out…”

I shook my head.  What was he talking about?  I hadn’t found out anything, not yet anyway.  “What?”  I asked, trying to remain calm.  “What’re you talking about?  I don’t understand...”

Trevor shook his head.  “You know, I always thought you were smart.”  He lunged at me.  He shoved me back into the wall, and held his hand securely
