My first mistake that day was taking the kids with me. My goal was just to drop off a few much needed supplies at our local Humane Society. We have adopted some of our best, most loving pets from there so we try to help out when we can. I stated; very matter of factly, before we got in the car that we were going there to drop off some things not to come home with anything. Well, as soon as we stepped foot in the door the kids spotted them. Two fluffy, chubby, adorable guinea pigs. They were sister, so housed together and obviously very attached to each other. There were two faces glued to the aquarium they were temporarily calling home.
Now here is where I made my second mistake. How could I say no when two kids are begging to hold those poor lonely guinea pigs for just a minute? I must admit, I was wanting to hold them also. It did not even take one second for that lid to come flying off. They were so soft and cuddly. And those little pigs were loving the attention. We held them and passed them off to each other for over twenty minutes. And none of us could separate ourselves from these two sisters
Then I stepped right into my third mistake. Asking the staff for more information about them. Come to find out they are very easy to care for. All they require is a cage, fresh pet litter or shredded newspaper, fresh food and fresh water. They would also appreciate attention and treats like any living thing. Really one of the easiest pets to care for they tell us. These two pigs had been there for a few months so the staff had also gotten to know their likes and dislikes. Come to find out they liked everything. Every treat they were ever given, any type of positive attention they recieved and every other type of pet they had been exposed to. Dislikes? They could not come up with any.
Well, by now I had started to fall for these loving little furballs as one of them lay cuddled in my arm this whole time. And this is where I did not make a mistake. We adopted and brought these wonderful creatures home to join our family. I have not ever regretted the mistakes I made that day because they led to one of the best decisions I have ever made.
