There are many types of backpacks available, from small frameless daypacks and overnight packs to framed high-capacity backpacks. The type chosen depends on the amount of gear that will be taken and how much walking will be done while carrying the backpack.
Daypacks and overnight packs, which are usually the best choice for short camping trips of a day or two, do not have frame support systems since they are not intended to carry a large quantity of gear. These packs typically are designed with a capacity of about 1,000 to 2,200 cubic inches, usually sufficient for one or two days of food supplies, water, extra clothing, toiletries and emergency supplies.
For longer camping trips, more gear will be carried like camp stoves, tents and greater quantities of food and water, so a larger capacity framed backpack should be chosen. There are two types of framed backpacks, exterior frame backpacks and backpacks with inner frames. Frames become necessary to make carrying heavier loads of camping equipment comfortably and safely. Framed backpacks, depending on the style chosen have designed capacities of 4,500 cubic inches or more.
Part of the decision of whether to choose an exterior frame or inner frame backpack can be personal preference on the part of experienced campers and backpackers. Some people simple prefer one type over the other. For example, exterior frame packs lend themselves to tying extra equipment like tents onto the frame. There are however some real advantages to an inner frame backpack.
Inner frame backpacks ride lower on the body making it easier to maintain balance on rugged or uphill terrain. They also feature a padded back section which makes them more comfortable to carry. The inner frame keeps the backpack away from the body which helps in keeping the wearer cooler.
Inner frame backpacks also have a compartment for storing and carrying a sleeping bag which can help keep them dry during wet weather outings. Sleeping bags must generally be lashed to the exterior of a backpack frame, at the top or bottom when an exterior frame backpack is used which exposes them to the elements and requires additional steps to be taken to prevent sleeping bags from getting wet.
Camping backpacks are available from a large number of sources and manufacturers. Some of the top names among backpack manufacturers are Gregory, North Face and Osprey. A good quality backpack can be an expensive piece of camping gear, but especially for those who choose to camp in remote areas requiring the camper to walk into and out of the site, quality is worth the cost. Quality backpacks usually have mechanisms for making precise personal adjustments to conform them to the wearer making them more comfortable and efficient to carry. Also, they tend to be far more durable than the cheaper models available from discounters. They will offer years of dependable and problem free use.
