Tips on choosing a comfortable sleeping bag

A memorable and enjoyable camping trip is sure to begin with comfort. Just as with selecting an appropriate tent, choosing the right sleeping bag is paramount to comfort. Sleeping bags come in a wide array of styles and temperature ratings to suit every camping situation. Likewise, sleeping bags will fluctuate in price, with something to fit everyone’s budget.

Weather is perhaps the most important factor to consider when choosing a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags vary from warm weather use, with a comfort rating set at 65 degrees or above, to the more extreme weather bags designed to be used in sub-zero climates. For summer camping, a lightweight all-purpose bag is not only a reasonable, but typically an economical choice. Not only is a lightweight bag practical during summer months, but it will also provide the camper with a degree of convenience as these bags tend to be lightweight and easy to pack.

For cooler temperatures, a sleeping bag with a lower temperature rating will provide the camper with adequate warmth as evening temperatures drop. Depending on design, lower rated bags tend to be a bit bulkier. Some bags, intended for sub-zero usage, are designed in such a manner as to recycle body heat. This innovation actually heats the bag by distributing the camper’s body weight throughout the bag. It is possible to sleep in such a bag with minimal clothing, even though the outside temperatures are quite cold. These bags typically come with what is called a heat baffle, or strip of material designed to hold the heat down in the bag when the camper’s head is exposed.

In addition to temperature ratings, sleeping bags typically come in either the traditional rectangular shape, or the “mummy” shaped bag which is more form fitting to the body. While rectangular bags are more comfortable, mummy bags typically provide the most warmth through their body-hugging design. Modern sleeping bags can also be found in child sizes as well as bags that can sleep two people. Some bags can even be zipped together to allow more sleeping space for couples.

Another factor to consider in choosing a sleeping bag is the material. Sleeping bags typically are made of either cloth or nylon, and provide varying degrees of comfort and practicality. Cloth sleeping bags may be more comfortable while nylon bags provide greater protection against damp weather. Some bags are available in waterproof material, such as Gortex, and are designed for greater exposure to the elements.

Whatever your camping experience, be sure that there is a sleeping bag designed to suit your needs. There are several manufacturers, such as Eureka and Coleman, who specialize in providing the camper with just the right equipment. And while Mother Nature remains unpredictable, a little careful planning in selecting the right sleeping bag will help ensure that your camping trip is memorable, and not miserable.
