Until I holidayed in Turkey a few years ago, jewellery wasn't high on my list of priorities. However, when I saw some of the beautifil pieces on offer - many of superior quality and a fraction of the price of similar items in the UK - I was hooked on jewellery.
I still don't have a great selection of jewellery - I'm too lazy to change my jewellery with my clothes, and I like to feel comfortable, so I tend to stick to the 'old faithfuls' - but these are my 'must have' pieces.
1. A plain gold chain necklace
I have a slim, twisted rope chain, bought in Turkey. The only time it's been off my neck in 9 years was when I had an operation some time ago. The chain goes with absolutely everything in my wardrobe, whether smart, casual or knock-'em dead dressy. It's understated adornment, and I love it.
2. Creole-style earrings
I have pierced ears, and I love to wear nice gold earrings. My everyday pair are medium-sized Creole hoops. This style of earrings is so versatile, anyone can wear them. The hoops range from small to fairground hoopla size, in a range of designs, so there's sure to be something to suit your style. With Creoles, you can just fasten them and forget you're wearing them. Creoles can be glamorous without being too flashy, so they're suitable for wearing anywhere, on any occasion.
3. A workaday watch
Most of us lead busy lives, and a watch is a necessity these days. I prefer a watch with a traditional dial rather than an LED display, and an expanding bracelet. There are plenty of styles to choose from, so it should be easy to find something to suit your lifestyle and budget.
4. A dress watch
It's no good getting dressed up to the nines for a special night out, then putting on the same watch you wear for work. Hint to husbands and significant others: a dress watch is a much more sensible gift option than a new frying pan, however battered and blackened the existing pan may be. Again, there is a huge choice of styles, (in dress watches, not frying pans!) so it should be relatively simple to find that special timepiece.
5. A bracelet or bangle
There are times when we all want to feel that little bit more dressed up and glamorous, and a nice cuff bracelet or bangle provides a quick fix. If you're only going for one piece, choose something classic, like a slim gold or silver bangle that will pair with anything in your wardrobe. Or you may want to have fun - in which case, opt for a selection of coloured, chunky cuff bracelets.
Those are my 5 must-have jewellery items. Jewellery is personal, so your top five items may be different, but as long as you look good and feel good, it really doesn't matter.
