The worst way that Americans continually take liberty for granted is by the creation of unnecessary and sundry laws. Most Americans think no further in supporting a law, than how it affects them personally. For instance they are all for banning smoking where they don't want to smell it. What so few realize is that each time they enforce one of their imagined rights to strip away the right of another human being , this action is done at the cost of liberty. Thomas Paine, a great revolutionary, said that If one sought liberty that they must also seek liberty for the rights of their enemy. The only way we can truely appreciate and preserve liberty as Americans is when we learn to mind our own business and take one for the team. In the case of smoking for instance Your lungs are NOT as important as the preservation of liberty, and if you think that they are, then you should ask yourself what that says about you. You are willing to send thousands of young men to die in foreign wars to protect liberty, but not to either smell smoke, or avoid a smokey barroom in order to protect it? That would be a sad statement about Americans, indeed.
