It’s not difficult to find romance online. With the number of Internet dating sites growing all the time, there’s certainly no shortage of eligible daters on the World Wide Web. But dating online is a little different to the more conventional ways of meeting a partner, and therefore a slight change in dating attitude may be needed if it’s going to work for you…

Be Positive

You may have come to Internet dating because of a recent broken heart, but try not to wear it on your sleeve. When compiling your online dating profile, refrain from mentioning your ex – and make no reference to being sad and lonely (however true it is). Instead, remain positive and upbeat. That way you will attract the right people. You really don’t want to spend dinner dates exchanging sob stories with a guy or girl who’s also just recently lost in the game of love.

In addition, don’t use your profile to get back at your ex – or anyone else for that matter. This is especially true for those online daters whose exes are registered on the same Internet dating site as themselves. While you might derive satisfaction from telling all and sundry on the site what a waste of time your ex was, you are unlikely to attract any new partners – in fact, quite the opposite. Remember that your online dating profile’s primary objective is to attract potential partners; keep all the salacious gossip about your ex for your friends’ ears only! 

Present Your Best Side

Like attracts like; if you want to meet someone who’s interesting, amusing and fun to be with, present yourself as someone who’s interesting, amusing and fun to be with. Play up your positive traits, and if you’re not sure what these are then ask your friends to tell you. Gloss over your less than positive characteristics, but do so in the right way: a certain amount of self-deprecation can be attractive, but if you lay it on too thickly, you risk coming across as full of self-pity. And glossing over your less savory characteristics doesn’t mean lying about them. While it’s acceptable not to disclose details about your near-obsession with collecting old 1960s vinyl LP records, it’s not acceptable to omit important aspects about yourself such as a pending divorce, or children. Don’t assume that no one will be interested in you if you’ve got baggage – your perfect match could also come complete with their own baggage.
