The idea of backpacking around the country, around a continent or around the world is a very romantic idea. And while it is a fantastic activity and I would recommend it to nearly anyone, there are some things to consider before you get completely swept away by the fantasy of sunning on a beach somewhere with no problems at all. Part of the excitement, delight and memories of backpacking is from the misadventures that happen. So while you should definitely plan, think ahead, and keep your wits about you, also be open to and able to deal with the unexpected.

Bring travel sizes of everything, but make sure that the liquids fit into the mandated quart size bag for liquids. Bring a small bar of soap instead of shower gel; it will help save room in your liquids bag.
Don't forget extra copies of prescriptions if you need them; going through customs, you may need to prove what the pills are in a pill bottle, etc.
Bring a mini-roll of duct tape and a padlock. If you tear your pack or
