Old fashioned family fun! That's what it's all about taking time out with your family. Get to know your kids as they are growing up. Having fun with the kids and your spouse really shows your kids a lot. Look at the families now that are separated or divorced. I think it's important to let the kids see you laugh together. It's important for the whole family to laugh together.
We have always been about the kids and family time. One of the most fun things we did when the kids were small was to take them to the drive in. I bet we went once a week, easily. Take a picnic, they played on the swings after we ate. We took blankets and pillows and a big brown bag of home popped corn. That is gone now, there is not too many of those left around anywhere that I know of. There are lots of other fun things to do.
Do you like to camp and fish and swim? Then take your family on a camping trip. Do things together, find a good fishing spot for a while. Then later after a wash up and lunch go swimming. Later by the camp fire with stories and fun and singing, laughing and SMORES! You have to have smores.
We put a pool in our back yard with a deck when the kids got old enough to handle it. Now, we don't have a bunch of money. Our pool was an above ground but we live on a slight hill. so we dug out a place for it where the bank was the steepest behind it. The kids helped with the work too. We put a deck around it from the ground behind it and it was like an in ground pool. We used it for a lot of years. Now the kids are older, we took out the pool and have a fire pit. We like to talk and sing around the fire, roast marsh mallows and hot dogs.
Lots of families have a game night, we always had pizza and movie night. We love to watch good movies together, and EAT. We make everything fun. The fun doesn't have to stop when your kids leave home. They love to come back for some of that family time together, now with thier wives and kids.
Just take something everyone likes to do and build around that.
