Perhaps it is her annual performing-arts festivals, with their long-standing reputation for hosting the highest quality venues, which attract the curiosity of laymen and critics by the millions.
Each year, primarily during the summer months, Scotland is host to a series of festivals which celebrate song, dance and theater. These festivals have attracted a world-wide audience and have become famed for their tradition of presenting the world’s finest talent.
Edinburgh International Festival
Founded in 1947 as a post-war effort to unite Europe through art, this annual festival has become one of the most prominent performing arts festivals in the world. Known for its high standards, the Edinburgh International Festival attracts a world-wide audience, and is open to artists and actors across the globe. Held annually during the month of August, this festival features several venues including dance, orchestra, soloists and chamber groups.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe began in 1947 when eight theatre groups showed up uninvited to the Edinburgh International Festival. Since then the “Fringe” has become a world-wide attraction, drawing thousands of visitors from across the globe. A sub-festival of the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival showcases some of the more obscure talent. With performances ranging from theatre groups to street performers, the Fringe is open to anyone with a story to tell.
Established in 1987, and sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Glasgow Jazz Festival is an annual festival hosted by the city of Glasgow each June. This international jazz festival attracts jazz musicians from across the globe. Featuring a wide range of style and sound, the Glasgow Jazz Festival has become one of the most prominent jazz festivals in the world.
Held annually in September, the Highland Games Festival is a display of Highland culture and tradition. With a primary emphasis on sporting games, spectators witness traditional events such as “throwing the hammer”, “tossing the caber”, and “tossing the weight”; all designed as feats of strength for the participants. In addition to the sporting events, spectators can revel in other Highland traditions such as bagpipes
